Texas Whirlwind

The last two weeks of October were a whirlwind of fun, travel and activity that left me excited, inspired and tired.

Driving down to Texas, Susan Stoltz, editor of Women Out West Magazine, and I had a great time getting to know one another. First stop, Denver where we met for lunch with Missy Kizer and Jim Swaim. In the short time we all spent together it was clear that these were friends we’d have for a long time. What outstanding people. We had a lovely time at a restaurant close to the airport for the specific purpose of not getting lost on the highway south. No such luck. Susan and I talked so much we were both unaware that a ‘loop’ is just that. By the time we realized we were headed North we were already in Westminster. This set the pattern for our trip and happened numerous times in several different locations!

Next stop Llano, Texas where we spent a few days at the charming home of Laurie Wagner Buyer and W.C. JamesonSuch warm and gracious people they are. We had all sorts of projects to complete, photographs to take, podcasts to tape, training on websites to do, margaritas to make and photograph (we drank them too and they were YUMMY!). Susan, as is her unique way, started ferreting out women business owners and suddenly we were doing impromptu interviews of some pretty outstanding ladies. We ended up with three interviews we weren’t even planning on.

Then it was a drive to Fredericksburg. W.C. chauffeured us that day for a lunch meeting with Abbey. Abbey is an outstanding woman who runs the music venue at Luckenbach. We got some terrific photographs of her in a lovely clothing and accessories store called Rawhide. Then it was off to tour Luckenbach where we met the owners and other movers and shakers there, talked about the possible Women Out West Fest, and delighted at the ‘chickens’ running two and fro. Standing on the stage where so many incredible musicians have played was certainly the highlight.

Next stop, San Antonio and the Women Writing the West Conference where WOW was presenting the 2008 Short Story Contest Awards. It was a terrific conference with many talented women. We filmed podcasts of Joyce Lohse, attended some great lecture sessions and had good food with new and old friends alike.

Susan and I brainstormed about websites and books, projects and podcasts, people and marketing and talked nearly non-stop, which is normal for Susan, but out of the ordinary for me! When the conference was over, we headed out, left our good friends behind, got lost in San Antonio on the ‘loop’ and finally found our way North via South. It was a great trip. Look for the podcasts and photos to appear both on the
Women Out West website and the next few upcoming issues!
